Select Paint Brushes

When working with latex or acrylic paints, choose a brush with a blend of nylon and polyester filaments (shown below). Nylon only filament brushes tend to be on the soft side of the scale in firmness. Nylon only is often used for spreading thin water-based clear finishes. Polyester adds a certain level of stiffness and form retention to the feel of the brush when loaded with paint and will help spread most paints.

If your project requires solvent based products such as polyurethane, stain, sanding sealer, varnish or oil-based paint, you will want to purchase a china bristle brush. China bristle comes in white and black. White China performs well with oil-based stains and clears while black china produces nice results with oil-based paints which are generally thick and heavier to spread than stains and clears.

Recommendations: 2 ½” nylon/poly blend angled sash brush

In the photo below you can noticeably see a difference in quality compared to the $12 brush shown above.
